A recent article published in AGU Advances uses remotely-sensed CO2 observations from the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-3 (OCO-3) to generate “top-down” emission estimates for CO2 for 54 global cities. These satellite emission estimates for 54 global cities agree within 7% to two widely used bottom-up data sets but reveal regional discrepancies. This study further explore the link between emissions, economies, and populations, and reveal that wealthier cities emit less CO2 per dollar of economic activity, and residents in larger cities tend to emit less CO2.
